A spiritual journey is often prompted by a sense that something is missing from one’s life or by the desire to become the best version of ourselves. Many are also seeking inner peace or to feel a stronger connection to who they are. This journey may look different for different people, but it generally begins with trying to learn more about oneself and the aspects of life that are preventing someone from living their life to the fullest. Once someone has decided to take a spiritual journey, spiritual planning comes into play; what steps can be taken to guide us on a spiritual journey?
Spiritual Planning: 7 Steps to Guide Your Spiritual Journey
If you’re ready to start a spiritual journey, you don’t want to overthink it but it’s also a good idea to approach your journey mindfully so you get the most out of the process. We share seven steps that you can take to help you connect with your spiritual side.
Step #1: Come in with an open mind
If you’re someone who has lived their life without thinking much about spirituality, it may take adjusting your perspective and opening your mind and heart to a spiritual connection. What type of spirituality speaks to you? Try not to limit yourself to certain religions or types of spirituality. According to happierhuman.com, these are the 5 types of spirituality to try in 2022:
1. Mystical
2. Authoritarian (often religious)
3. Intellectual
4. Service
5. Social
Step #2: Do some soul searching
Be honest with yourself. Here are some questions to get you started:
1. What areas do you need to grow as a person?
2. Are there specific things in your life that aren’t working the way you want them to?
3. Has the universe been trying to send you a message?
4. Are there types of spiritual principles such as peace, joy, love, and connection that you feel are missing from your life?
5. What types of spirituality do you want to learn more about?
Step #3: Identify what activities or actions you can take to feed your spiritual journey
There are many activities that can feed into our spiritual journey. Don’t forget, the more you put into them, the more you’re likely to get out of them. Here are 10 activities that you can do to work on your spiritual growth. Do any of these resonate with you?
1. Set aside time each day to pray, read, be in nature, or meditate
2. Practice mindfulness – spend 10 minutes focusing completely on the present moment
3. Forgive yourself – showing empathy for yourself is just as important as showing it for others
4. Go for a nature walk/hike
5. Swim in a natural body of water
6. Step outside and gaze at the moon and enjoy the sunrise or sunset on a regular basis
7. Start a gratitude journal
8. Volunteer with an organization that you’re passionate about
9. Join a spiritual group
10. Sign up for yoga, Qi Gong or other activity that can lead to spiritual growth and healing
Step #4: Surrender
A burning inner desire to feed spiritual growth may come at a very busy or otherwise inconvenient time in your life. Try to surrender to the idea that your inner voice is trying to tell you something important. Learning to let go of to-do lists and other’s expectations of us can be hugely freeing. Give yourself permission to surrender to your need for self-care and spiritual growth from time to time. You deserve to be the best version of yourself, both for your own sake and for your loved ones who love and depend on you.
Step #5: Accept that your spiritual journey may suffer some setbacks
Like many things in life, spiritual growth doesn’t always happen on a straightforward trajectory. It’s perfectly normal to feel you are making great progress, only to suffer a setback or to get frustrated because things aren’t changing as quickly as you want them to. The trick is to not be too hard on yourself and to keep going, even if you’re feeling a little discouraged. Besides, there’s some beauty in taking the long way on a winding path. Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses and breathe in the fresh air along the way.
Step #6: Learn to appreciate the quiet spaces
Most of us lead very busy lives, raising kids, helping our aging parents, and/or working long hours. One of the most important things we can do on our spiritual journey is to learn to slow down and enjoy the quiet spaces. This can look like meditation, yoga, taking a nature walk, painting, or simply curling up for a mid-afternoon nap. Learn to clear your mind each day to leave space for spiritual growth.
Step #7: Identify one or two possible spiritual paths
Now that you have had some time to think about it, choosing a spiritual path (or two) that interests you to learn more about is a great next step. You may wish to find a spiritual mentor who can help guide you on your journey, visit an organization, or sign up for a class so you can get a better sense for which path(s) you wish to pursue.
We wish you well on your spiritual journey.
