Our mind, body, and spirit are deeply intertwined and call out to be harmonized. When one aspect of our health is out of whack, it can significantly affect other areas of our wellbeing. Achieving a connection to the divine and the inner-peace that comes along with improving spiritual health may not solve every problem in our lives but it can certainly help us to cope with life’s ups and downs. There are many ways to improve spiritual health; we’ll cover some of them in this article.
What is spiritual health?
Many people associate spirituality with religion or the faith they were raised with. They may have negative associations with the messages they were sent as children. The truth is that there is a vast world of spirituality out there. Different people achieve spiritual health – and the sense of internal wellbeing that comes with it – in a wide variety of ways. For some, spirituality comes from spending time in nature, for others its music, or belief in a higher power. Your individual values and beliefs will have a big influence on how you approach spirituality.
Top 8 ways to improve your spiritual health
There are many roads that can lead to spiritual health; there is no right or wrong path for improving spiritual wellness. What’s important is to choose a path that speaks to you and helps you to connect with universal energy.
1. Find a spiritual advisor or mentor
When we’re starting on our spiritual journey, it’s fairly common to want a little guidance. Look for someone who is trained as a spiritual advisor, mentor, or religious leader who you believe to be trustworthy and in line with your beliefs and values.
2. Find a way to help others
Sometimes the best way to improve spiritual health is to step outside of yourself and find ways to help others in need. This can look like volunteering through a local organization, helping your neighbors, or bringing food or treats to friends and loved ones who need cheering up. Some specific ideas are fostering animals, becoming a mentor, or shoveling snow for your elderly neighbors. Doing things for others can help increase your sense of connection to your community and give you a sense of purpose and gratitude.
3. Start yoga, Qigong, or tai chi
Yoga, Qigong, and tai chi are all eastern medicine practices that can help to improve our spiritual health and reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. There are beginner courses available in all three practices.
Yoga is a spiritual discipline from ancient India that focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. The spiritual practices work to control and still the mind.
Qigong (also called qi gong, chi kung, chi ‘ung, or chi gung) is a system of coordinated body-posture and movement, breathing, and meditation learned to improve health, spirituality, and martial-arts training.
Tai chi has been a pillar of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. Movements learned in tai chi practice are designed to promote serenity and bring balance to your body’s energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”). Tai chi is often described as “meditation in motion.”
4. Join a faith community that speaks to you
There are all kinds of different faith communities out there. If you feel a call to connect with the divine, a faith community may be a good fit for you. Each place of worship offers its own path to spirituality; look for a faith community that fits with your beliefs and ideals. This may look like reconnecting with the religion you were raised with or walking down a whole new path. Either way, look for a supportive and encouraging environment that will enhance your spiritual journey. Start by contacting a local pastor or spiritual leader to ask about the current options for joining a service or group activities.
5. Meditate
There are many ways to learn the art of meditation and you certainly don’t need to be an expert to reap its benefits. It also doesn’t require an enormous time commitment or the need to sit still. What’s important for meditation is being mindful – feel the earth beneath your feet and focus your mind on the present moment. Start by committing five minutes a day to clearing your mind and breathing deeply. If you would like help, there are many great guided meditation apps and YouTube videos.
6. Immerse yourself in nature
No matter where you live, there should be some areas of beautiful nature. Are you near a forest? Rolling hills? The ocean? A pretty lake? Even a nature trail in the middle of a busy city can be a useful retreat into nature. Put your phone away and breathe into the beauty all around you; marvel at the birds fluttering in the trees, or listen to the sound of the wind, or ocean. Nature therapy is a powerful way to ease your stress and increase your connection to the natural world.
7. Take up a hobby
It’s common for life to get busy and hobbies to go by the wayside. But we benefit when we take the time to do things we enjoy; especially activities that feed into our creativity. Some ideas are adult coloring books, knitting, learning to play a musical instrument, voice lessons, cooking, or playing a sport. Making time to do things that we enjoy can bring joy to our lives.
8. Start journaling
Journaling has many benefits; it can help us process our emotions, express big feelings without hurting others, and get more in touch with our inner voice. One of the aspects of spiritual health is gratitude and keeping a gratitude journal can be an important part of that work.
